Hi, my name is Jamela S. I am a US Army veteran of 8 years. I am currently in school for Network Engineer working on my Associate’s degree. I have natural hair and I love it. Going back natural was the best decision I could have made for my hair. I now have BSL(Bra Strap Length) hair and my goal is WL(Waist Length). I wash my hair with a shampoo once/twice a month and I co-wash as needed. I always follow up with a deep conditioner and rinse with cool water. It took me a while to figure out what my hair needs to be great, but I enjoyed learning along the way. At times, I wish I would have gone natural sooner, but I don’t think I could maintain it as good being in the military.
I started my transition in June 2012, and I big chopped on Dec 2012. This year in December I will be at 5 years natural. I returned natural because I realized that my hair was thinning out, breaking, and wouldn’t grow, I had no edges and no hair at the nape of my head (Lower neck, or the kitchen as some call it). After taking out a set of kinky twist, I made my decision. At first, I was skeptical but I am glad that I continued my journey.
If someone was thinking about returning natural, I would tell them that being natural can be a lot of work but it is well worth it. If you transition your way through, make sure to handle your hair gently because you are handling two different textures and the ends are very sensitive. You will want to keep your hair moisturized so that it doesn’t get dry and brittle. Always detangle your hair gently, and don’t use heat often. I use heat once or twice a year. Once you find the right products that give your hair moisture you will become in love with your hair. Oh, and you will have shrinkage all that means is that your hair is healthy embrace it! Wear your crown with pride!
I have been through a lot of products, but I have finally figured out what works best for my 4c hair. I love oils such as my favorite Jojoba oil. I also use Olive, Castor, and Avocado, and sometimes coconut oil. I mostly use Jojoba, Avocado, and olive when styling, and coconut oil when conditioning. Products I use regularly are, Herbal Essence Hello Hydration or Aussie Mega Moist conditioner, Dark and Lovely AU Naturale Coil Moisturizing Soufflé, Aloe Vera Gel, and whipped Shea Butter that I make myself. I also use organic honey for my deep condition and ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar) as a rinse.Other products I have used are Suave Naturals Shampoo and Pantene Co-Wash.
My favorite go to hairstyle are twists, they are low maintenance and they allow for my hair to rest and grow. When I install my protective twists I usually leave them in for 4 months with a re-twist every two weeks. I also love puffs and twist out, the puff is easy to do after wearing my hair in a twist out.
You will want to find out a routine that suits you, this may take time. Just be patient and give your hair the love it deserves.
