Hi, my name is Lydia Perry and I am from Chattanooga TN. I currently reside in Memphis Tn.
I have been natural since 2010. I decided I wanted my hair to be healthier and embrace my natural roots. Growing up in the 80’s we were taught that relaxed hair was more acceptable. I wanted to show women that kinky hair is beautiful.
I actually had really good support from my daughters. My oldest was already natural. Now all of the women in my family are natural including my mom, sisters, daughters and nieces.
I had a few friends who felt it would hurt me in my career. Working in a Corporate environment, your polished appearance is strongly stressed.
Sometimes I hear when are you going perm your hair, I smile and say never!
I did a big chop in 2008 and transitioned into a loose natural in 2010. I wore my hair loose natural for seven years and loc’d my hair in 2017, nearing my two year anniversary March 25, 2019.
I love using natural products on my hair. Currently my favorites are Beekman’s Goat Shampoo Bar for washing my hair. I also love doing hot oil treatments with vitamin e oil. I love Taliah Waajid healing oil. I love Jojoba oil, castor oil, rose water, olive oil, tea tree oil and peppermint oil. Those are my must have staples.
I believe in simplicity. I usually do a hot oil treatment every four months. I moisturize my locs every other day with my rose water and oil spritz. I use the heavier oils during the winter months to help combat dryness. Heavy oils are castor oil and peppermint oils.
I usually shampoo twice a month or as needed if heavy sweating. I spritz and oil my hair every other day. I cover my locs with a satin scarf each night while sleeping. I also use a silk pillow case.
I do not believe natural hair is a fad. Women are falling in love with their natural hair again! Loving the diversity of styles and textures. I believe it is only going to get better!
My daughters are my biggest inspiration! They have always embraced their hair regardless of who was watching. I also have many social media influencers who have inspired me along my journey, Zen Lioness, Desiree Marie, Naturalista4me, Auset, just to name a few! Lol
If I could say something to inspire someone who is feeling discouraged about their journey, I would tell them to love themselves just the way God created you! Beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, and textures of hair. You are uniquely you! Just as the diversity in beauty of flowers, so is your hair. It is a beautiful flower waiting to bloom for the world to see!
