I was diagnosed with eczema at a young age. I believe I was around the age of seven. Growing up I had dry, itchy, scaly and oozing skin on my elbows. I now have it every now and then on my right elbow. I also have it on my hands. It can be very aggravating as I must be careful what I apply to my skin and with it being on my hands, that makes it that much harder. My hands are always exposed and touching many different things throughout the day.
Having eczema in visible places can be very embarrassing. Imagine having dry, scaling oozing skin on your hands and someone reaches out to give you a hand shake or you are handing someone money at the store to pay for your goods and you notice the cashier gives your hands a prolonged look. Yea, this has been my life. I have learned some things that I will share in this blog post but first let’s get into what eczema is.
Eczema is also known as atopic dermatitis. It is a skin condition and symptoms vary from person to person. The skin may be red, itchy, oozing and scaly. Eczema can be found on various places of the body: hands, back of the legs, on the nap of the neck area, on the scalp and the arms- just to name a few.
As I have grown older, I pay attention to the triggers of my eczema. I notice that when I am stressed, or my diet is not as healthy as it should be, my hands begin to itch and ooze. Diet plays a major role in eczema and we covered this in my last semester of class at the American College of Healthcare Sciences. I am currently attending this school to obtain a Holistic Health Practitioner Diploma.
As we continue to consume foods that do not support a healthy digestive system, our gut health goes downhill, and this is a major contribution to eczema. To test this, I went on a green smoothie cleansing diet for three days. I replaced my meals with green smoothies that consisted of fruits and leafy greens. I had no dairy and drank a lot of water. I played around with recipe combinations and some were tasty, and some were disgusting. I am going to be completely honest here. Some combinations I will be staying away from.
I have gotten better at creating green smoothie blends with great taste. I know which fruits will work to better the taste and sweeten. Bananas and strawberries have a bold flavor. Pineapple helps to sweeten. My base consisted of leafy greens such as kale, chard and spinach.
The smoothie cleanse helped me to cleanse my digestive tract and I did notice that I did not scratch my hands not one time during this cleansing. I also did not have to apply any type of ointment or cream for a few days after doing my cleansing. So, gut health is a big contributor to my eczema. Staying away from dairy also helps A LOT.
I have used hydrocortisone for years to help soothe my eczema. It has worked for me but there is something that I do not like about it. Hydrocortisone contains chemicals and has side effects.
I have been applying a chemical filled cream directly to my broken skin for years. Hmmm…. So, what are these side effects? Hydrocortisone can cause nausea, dizziness, headaches, heartburn, thinning of the skin, stretchmarks, menstrual period changes, insomnia and acne. Can a Sista get something side effect free please? If I am applying a chemical to my body, it is a given that my body could react in some way.
Because of my love for holistic health, I began to consider some ways to care for my eczema so that I can toss that hydrocortisone to the side. I began whipping up my own Shea butter and adding herbal infused oils that are good for eczema. I chose herbs that are beneficial for eczema and healing the skin. Eczema can also cause the skin to turn dark and Shea butter helps me with that.
If you are looking for a chemical free way to care for your eczema, eating a healthy, dairy free diet in combination with natural soothers/healers (for external) can work for you.
